SC Agrees to Consider Fresh Plea Against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Over Alleged Hate Speeches

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it would consider listing a fresh petition seeking action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a series of alleged hate speeches targeting the Muslim community in the state.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant was urged to list the newly filed plea, which has been moved by four individuals, alongside an earlier petition filed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and CPI leader Annie Raja. The earlier plea pertains to a viral video allegedly showing CM Sarma firing a rifle and purportedly targeting members of the Muslim community.

On Tuesday, the bench had agreed to list the CPI(M) and Annie Raja’s plea for hearing.

On Wednesday, counsel appearing in the fresh matter requested that both petitions be heard together, citing the overlapping factual background and allegations of hate speech by the Assam Chief Minister.

The court took note of the submission and agreed to consider clubbing the matters for hearing. Further directions on the listing are expected in the coming days.
