The father of the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder victim has approached the Calcutta High Court challenging a lower court’s refusal to permit his lawyers to inspect the scene of crime.
In his petition, he sought the setting aside of a Sealdah sessions court order dated July 9, which had denied permission for his legal team to visit the seminar room of the state-run hospital where his daughter was found dead on August 9, 2024.
Grounds of the Petition
The petitioner argued that he has reasons to believe that more than one person was present during the crime, despite the conviction of Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with Kolkata Police. Roy has already been sentenced by the trial court to imprisonment till the end of his natural life for the rape and murder of the doctor.

To assist the court in identifying any possible lapses in the investigation, the petitioner urged that his lawyer, senior advocate Phiroze Edulji, along with six junior advocates, be granted two hours’ access to the crime scene for an independent examination.
Case Background
The brutal incident took place on August 9 last year, when the body of the young on-duty doctor was discovered in the seminar room of the hospital, sparking nationwide outrage and protests. Following the trial, Sanjay Roy was found guilty and sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by the Sealdah sessions court.
High Court Hearing Expected
The plea filed by the victim’s father is expected to be listed for hearing before a single bench of the Calcutta High Court early next week, his counsel confirmed.
