The Rajasthan High Court has strongly criticised the State Election Commission (SEC) for the prolonged delay in conducting municipality elections, directing it to take urgent steps to ensure the polls are held without further postponement.
A single-judge bench of Justice Anoop Dhand observed that the SEC cannot remain a “silent spectator” by ignoring the constitutional mandate. The court noted that the extended delay in holding local body elections was derailing the process of grassroots governance and undermining democratic institutions.
Justice Dhand emphasised that the terms of several urban local bodies across the state had already expired, yet elections had not been conducted within the stipulated six months as required under the Constitution. The court warned that any further delay was contrary to the principles of local self-governance.
The bench directed the SEC to take appropriate measures immediately to conduct the pending elections and restore proper functioning of municipalities in accordance with the law.
