Rahul Gandhi Receives Temporary Relief from High Court in Defamation Case

The Jharkhand High Court has granted significant relief to Congress National President Rahul Gandhi by putting a one-month stay on the non-bailable warrant issued against him on February 27, 2024. The warrant was issued by the Chaibasa Civil Court during a hearing on a defamation case. Gandhi had filed a petition in the High Court against the warrant, which led to today’s hearing and subsequent relief.

The defamation case dates back to 2018 and involves comments made by Gandhi during a Congress convention in New Delhi. He had stated that “anyone can be a national president in the BJP, even if they have a history of murder.” At that time, the current Home Minister Amit Shah was the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These remarks led Pratap Katiyar, the Deputy President of the BJP Youth Wing in the state, to file a defamation case against Gandhi in the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Chaibasa.

The High Court’s decision to stay the warrant offers a temporary respite to Gandhi, allowing him more time to address the allegations made against him.
