A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court, advocating for the reservation of seats for women in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections. The petition, spearheaded by Shabana Hussain and represented by advocate Ashu Bidhuri, aims to address the gender disparity in the electoral process of the students’ union, which Hussain argues is dominated by money and muscle power, discouraging female participation.
The PIL is set to be heard on Wednesday by a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela. With the DUSU elections scheduled for September 27, the timing of the petition is critical as the nomination process begins on September 17.
Hussain’s petition underscores the need for mandated women’s representation in student politics, aiming to ensure a more balanced and inclusive electoral environment.
