The central government has confirmed in the Rajya Sabha that there are currently no plans to increase the salaries, allowances, or pensions of Supreme Court and high court judges. This statement was made on Thursday by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who responded in writing to inquiries on the matter.
According to Minister Meghwal, the compensation packages for judges of the Supreme Court and the 25 high courts are regulated under The Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Act, 1958, and The High Court Judges (Salary and Conditions of Services) Act, 1954. These statutes govern all aspects of judicial pay, allowances, and pensions.
The last revision in the judicial salary structure occurred in 2016, following the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission, which were implemented from January 1 of that year. This adjustment resulted in the Chief Justice of India (CJI) receiving a monthly salary of Rs 2.80 lakh. Similarly, judges of the Supreme Court and chief justices of the high courts have been earning Rs 2.50 lakh per month, while judges of the high courts have a monthly salary of Rs 2.25 lakh.
