New Supreme Court Collegium Composition After Justice A.S. Oka’s Retirement

With the retirement of Justice Abhay S. Oka on May 24, 2025, the composition of the Supreme Court’s collegium—the body responsible for recommending appointments and transfers of judges—has changed.

Current Collegium Members:

  • Chief Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai (CJI)
  • Justice Surya Kant
  • Justice Vikram Nath
  • Justice J.K. Maheshwari
  • Justice B.V. Nagarathna

Justice B.V. Nagarathna has joined the collegium as its fifth member, replacing Justice Oka. She is now poised to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027 and will remain part of the collegium until her retirement in October 2027.

The collegium, led by CJI Gavai, is expected to meet on May 26 to address three vacancies in the Supreme Court and consider key appointments in several high courts. Justice Nagarathna’s inclusion marks a significant step toward greater gender representation at the apex level, as she is currently the only woman on the collegium.

Justice Oka’s retirement further reduces the Supreme Court’s strength, underscoring the urgency for new appointments—a matter the collegium is set to deliberate on in its upcoming meeting.
