MP High Court Seeks Responses on Plea Alleging Irregularities in Voter List Revision for Urban Body Polls

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday sought short responses from the state government, the State Election Commission and other authorities on a petition alleging serious irregularities in the ongoing voter list revision exercise for the upcoming urban local body elections.

The petition was filed by senior Congress leader Dilip Kaushal, who currently heads the party’s election affairs department in Indore and is also a former councillor. His counsel, Jayesh Gurnani, said the plea raises concerns about the integrity and transparency of the revision process.

Speaking to reporters, Gurnani explained that the plea challenges the voter list revision being conducted under the Madhya Pradesh Municipal Election Rules, 1994, which the petition describes as “flawed”. He said the alleged discrepancies include the failure to publicise applications for addition and deletion of names, deployment of ineligible personnel as booth-level officers, and the suspicious registration of a large number of voters under municipal building number “0” in one part of Indore.

“While hearing the petition, the High Court sought brief responses from the state government, the State Election Commission, the District Election Officer of Indore and all voter registration officers of the city,” Gurnani said.

The petition requests the court to halt the ongoing revision programme and restrain authorities from publishing the final electoral roll until the matter is fully considered. The High Court has scheduled the next hearing for November 26.
