Martyrs’ Day: SC Judges, Lawyers Observe Two-Minute Silence

The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed a two-minute silence in the memory of those who laid down their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom.

A seven-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, which was hearing arguments on the issue of minority status of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), stood up at 10.59 am and observed two-minute silence.

Thereafter, all the benches resumed the days’ proceeding.

January 30 marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and is observed as Martyrs’ Day.

“As per practice followed every year, two minutes’ silence will be observed at 11.00 am on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 in the memory of those who laid down their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom,” a circular issued by the apex court on January 25 said.
