A group of Supreme Court lawyers recited the Preamble to the Indian Constitution on Thursday to express solidarity with student-led demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and voice opposition to police actions against the protesters.
The gathering took place during the apex court’s afternoon lunch recess under the banner of the “Save Democracy, Save Constitution” campaign. Senior advocates Indira Jaising and S Muralidhar led the recitation, with Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh also in attendance.
Lawyers Demand Redress for Students
Speaking to reporters following the event, Jaising stated that the attorneys gathered to uphold justice and advocate for student rights rather than personal grievances. She noted that because the Supreme Court functions as an institution to dispense justice, legal professionals hold a duty to bring student concerns before the tribunal.
Background of the Demonstration
The demonstration at the apex court coincides with an ongoing sit-in at Jantar Mantar that began on June 20 under the CJP movement, an initiative formed to address examination paper leaks and systemic irregularities. The movement was sparked by a remark from Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who referred to youngsters as “cockroaches.”
