In a startling turn of events, two groups of lawyers engaged in a physical altercation at a canteen in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, following a heated court session. The brawl, which involved punches and kicks, took place on Tuesday, August 27, escalating tensions within the local legal community.
The dispute began earlier in the day during a court session at the Uttarakhand Revenue Council where a senior lawyer was involved in a contentious argument. Following the court proceedings, the senior lawyer and his counterparts moved to the canteen. It is alleged that a lawyer from Luxor, accompanied by several associates, targeted the senior lawyer while he was having tea.
Eyewitnesses claim that the altercation quickly escalated, with the Luxor-based lawyer and his group not only assaulting the senior advocate but also allegedly attempting to abduct him in a vehicle. The situation was brought under control when other lawyers intervened, causing the assailants to flee the scene.
Following the incident, the Dehradun legal community staged a work boycott, expressing solidarity with the assaulted lawyer and calling for action against the perpetrators. The matter has since been brought to the attention of the Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh, who confirmed that a formal complaint had been lodged by the Dehradun Bar Association.
“We have received the complaint and have summoned both parties for a discussion. Further actions will be determined based on the outcome of these discussions and the ongoing investigation,” SSP Singh stated.
The Bar Association’s secretary, Rajveer Singh Bisht, emphasized the severity of the incident, noting that such behavior tarnishes the reputation of the legal profession. The legal community in Dehradun has called for a swift resolution and appropriate legal action to prevent such incidents in the future.
