Law an Ever-Evolving Field: Supreme Court Justice KV Viswanathan

At the 21st KK Luthra Memorial Moot Court Competition held at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre, Supreme Court Justice KV Viswanathan praised the dynamic nature of law and encouraged law students to embrace the discipline’s multifaceted aspects. On Friday, Justice Viswanathan addressed an audience of aspiring lawyers, emphasizing the need for a broad legal education and the development of robust advocacy skills.

During his speech, Justice Viswanathan cited the “seven lamps of advocacy”—honesty, courage, industry, wit, eloquence, fellowship, and tact—as crucial qualities for successful legal practitioners. He advised students against adopting an aggressive stance in court, instead promoting a composed and thoughtful approach to argumentation.

“Mooting plays a pivotal role in shaping a law student’s career, enhancing their confidence, legal writing skills, and research capabilities,” Justice Viswanathan remarked, underscoring the competition’s role in legal education.

This year’s moot court drew participation from 127 institutions globally, including 75 teams from top law schools such as NLSIU Bangalore, Symbiosis Law School, and ILS Law College Pune, among others. International competitors included teams from Northumbria University, University of Mauritius, University of Zimbabwe, and Tashkent State University of Law.

The moot problem challenged participants to debate the legality of using artificial intelligence in policing, a pressing issue in the legal and technological realms. Discussions delved into the reliability and legal standing of digital forensic evidence derived from technologies like facial recognition and social media analytics.
