Kapil Sibal, a veteran lawyer and former Union minister, has declared his intention to run for the presidency of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). The elections are scheduled for May 16, with the results expected to be announced on May 19.
A graduate of Harvard Law School, Sibal has a distinguished legal career, including serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1989 to 1990. He was designated as a senior advocate in 1983 and has previously held the position of SCBA president three times between 1995 and 2002.
The announcement was confirmed by SCBA Honorary Secretary Rohit Pandey, marking Sibal’s return to active participation in the association’s leadership. He will be contesting against the incumbent president, Senior Advocate Adish Aggarwala.
The SCBA plays a critical role as part of India’s judicial system, highlighted by a recent directive from the Supreme Court. Justices Surya Kant and K V Vishwanathan emphasized the association’s importance and ordered that certain executive committee posts, including the treasurer for the 2024-2025 term, be reserved for women, promoting greater inclusivity within the SCBA.
