In a recent announcement, the Central government has approved the appointment of Justice D Krishnakumar as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. The current Madras High Court judge will assume his new role following the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice Siddharth Mridul on November 21.
Union Minister of State with independent charge of the Law and Justice Ministry, Arjun Ram Meghwal, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), marking a significant transition in the judicial leadership in Manipur.
This appointment follows the recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium on November 18, stating, “It is proposed to appoint Mr. Justice D. Krishnakumar, presently serving as a Judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur with effect from the date on which the incumbent Chief Justice demits office on retirement.”
Justice Krishnakumar, who was appointed to the Madras High Court on April 7, 2016, is recognized for his seniority and expertise. As the senior-most puisne judge of the Madras High Court, he has a distinguished background in handling civil, constitutional, and service matters, with a specialization in constitutional law. Additionally, he is noted for his belonging to a Backward Community, bringing a diverse perspective to his high-ranking judicial role.
