High Court Summons Traffic Police Guard Accused of Forcibly Seizing Lawyer’s Driving License

In an alarming incident, a traffic police sergeant is accused of extorting money and seizing driving license of a Lawyer.

The traffic police officer allegedly demanded money from a lawyer, leading to an order by Calcutta High Court’s Judge Amrita Sinha for the accused traffic guard to appear in the High Court.

The guard is scheduled to appear in court on April 2nd, following an order issued on Thursday.

The incident reportedly took place last Tuesday when Traffic Guard Palash Halder allegedly demanded a sum of ₹1000 from lawyer Shubhrangshu Panda while he was crossing the Second Hooghly Bridge.

Upon refusal to pay, Palash threatened to cancel the lawyer’s driving license. The lawyer protested, stating that this was not a lawful way to extract money and presented the verdict of the court to the traffic personnel.

It is alleged that after a prolonged argument, the police officer confiscated the lawyer’s license.

Judge Sinha was taken aback upon hearing the entire incident from the lawyer on Thursday. Subsequently, she ordered the traffic guard to personally appear in court.

Shubhrangshu claims this isn’t the first instance of such behavior from the police officer, alleging a previous incident where the officer extorted ₹500 from another lawyer.
