The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday postponed the hearing of a pivotal plea regarding the Gyanvapi mosque until May 5, 2025. The plea seeks permission for an archaeological survey of the Wazukhana area within the mosque complex, located adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi.
The hearing was adjourned by Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal in light of an interim order from the Supreme Court. This order, dated April 21, 2025, mandates that no court should issue any significant interim or conclusive judgments concerning surveys of religious sites until further notice.
The court has granted additional time for the managing committee of the Gyanvapi mosque to submit its counter affidavit regarding the petition. The plea, initiated by Rakhi Singh, challenges a prior decision by a Varanasi court which declined to instruct the Archaeological Survey of India to conduct the survey.
