In an effort to improve judicial efficiency and reduce case backlogs, the Government of India has sent a proposal to the Supreme Court and 25 high courts, suggesting staggered vacations for judges. This initiative, based on recommendations from a parliamentary committee, aims to keep the courts operational throughout the year.
Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, in a written statement to the Lok Sabha on Friday, disclosed that the suggestion was initially proposed by former Chief Justice of India, R M Lodha. Justice Lodha had advocated for individual judges to take leave at different times during the year, ensuring that the judiciary remains continuously active and available to address cases.
The parliamentary committee on law and personnel, previously chaired by the late Sushil Modi, endorsed this idea in its action taken report presented in Parliament in February. The report emphasized that staggered vacations could prevent the judiciary from closing for nearly two months annually, a practice that currently contributes to significant delays in the handling of cases.
Meghwal informed the House that the recommendation had been forwarded to the Secretary General of the Supreme Court and the Registrars General of the high courts for “appropriate consideration.” The move is seen as a critical step towards implementing reforms aimed at enhancing the responsiveness and effectiveness of the judicial system.
