Vikas Singh, the former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and a senior lawyer, has voiced serious concerns over the Supreme Court’s recent decision to transform the old judges’ library into a public museum. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud inaugurated the new National Judicial Museum and Archive within the Supreme Court premises on Thursday, amidst attendance from justices and members of the bar.
In a letter addressed to Chief Justice Chandrachud on Wednesday, Singh expressed “deep pain and anguish” over what he perceives as disregard for the needs of the legal community in recent infrastructure changes at the Court. He highlighted that the location of the Judges’ Library, within a high-security zone, makes it unsuitable for conversion to a museum accessible by the public.
Singh argued that the growing SCBA membership urgently needs facilities such as a dedicated cafeteria, workstations, restrooms, and a well-equipped library near the courtrooms. He stressed that the current facilities for advocates are either inadequately equipped or inconveniently located, complicating daily activities for legal professionals at the Court.
