Mumbai police have initiated an investigation after discovering items commonly associated with “black magic” outside the Bombay High Court on University Road. The discovery, which included lemons, a coconut, sindoor (vermilion), and black voodoo dolls, was made on March 24 and has prompted concerns over the intent behind leaving such objects in a highly public and sensitive area.
The Azad Maidan police registered an FIR on March 26 against unidentified individuals, following a complaint from EB Shivkumar, the Additional Registrar (Original Side) of the High Court. The case has been filed under the stringent provisions of The Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil, and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013.
According to the police, a similar assortment of objects wrapped in newspapers was also found near a tree close to the high court’s exit gate leading towards Oval Maidan. The peculiar placement and nature of these items have led to an intense review of CCTV footage from the surrounding areas in an attempt to identify those responsible.

In his official complaint, Shivkumar reported that the high court administration was alerted to the situation through news broadcasts. The administration suspects that the objects may have been deliberately placed by an individual or group aiming to invoke fear or superstition among the public. “The court administration took immediate action upon learning about these unsettling findings, directing that the matter be reported to the police,” Shivkumar stated.
The incident has stirred unease among court officials and the public alike, given the location’s prominence and the potential implications of such acts. The police are currently analyzing video footage and conducting inquiries to trace the origins of these items and to understand the motivations behind this act.
