The Kerala High Court has intervened to ensure the safety of residents in Kannur district, directing the state government to maintain “constant vigilance” and close monitoring of a wild elephant known as “KM1.” The animal has been frequently spotted near the Aralam farm and neighboring tribal settlements, sparking significant safety concerns.
On Friday, a division bench comprising Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice Easwaran S issued the directive in response to a petition highlighting the potential danger posed by the elephant’s movements in these populated regions.
The court’s order places the responsibility squarely on the state forest department to ensure the elephant is “properly monitored.” The bench emphasized that authorities must take every necessary step to prevent future incidents involving the animal.
“We make it clear that every effort should be taken to ensure that no further mishaps are caused on account of the movement of the elephant,” the court stated. “The competent authorities should be on watch and surveillance to ensure this.”
While noting that such a reminder should ideally be “unnecessary,” the bench felt compelled to reiterate the state’s fundamental duty to its people. “Every life is precious, and citizens must be protected through strict control and surveillance, as necessary,” the court observed.
The legal action follows a petition filed by Baiju Paul Mathews P M, who informed the Bench that KM1 has a documented history of attacking humans. The petitioner’s concerns were echoed by counsel representing the Aralam farm, confirming that the elephant’s proximity to the farm and surrounding tribal areas poses an immediate threat to the local community.
The court has demanded a formal response from the state authorities regarding their monitoring efforts and safety protocols.
The state forest department is now required to provide an update on its surveillance measures before the next scheduled hearing. The case is set for further consideration on May 20, 2026.
Local residents and tribal families in the Aralam region will be looking to this intervention to provide much-needed security against the ongoing human-wildlife conflict in the area.
