District and Sub-Division Courts in Amritsar Temporarily Closed to Public Till May 14 Amid Security Concerns

The Punjab & Haryana High Court has ordered the temporary closure of the District Court at Amritsar and the Sub-Divisional Court in the border town of Ajnala for public entry from May 9 to May 14, 2025. The directive comes in light of precautionary measures aimed at limiting public footfall and ensuring operational continuity in a restricted manner.

According to the official communication, “The Courts at Headquarters Amritsar and Sub-Divisional Courts at Ajnala be closed temporarily for public entry, to restrict footfall and be run in a restricted manner for a period of four days w.e.f. 09.05.2025 to 14.05.2025.”

In addition to barring public access, the High Court has also limited the presence of judicial officers and court personnel during this period. “The daily attendance of hundred percent staff members attached to the courts be exempted and only 50% of the staff of each respective Courts shall attend duty on rotation basis,” the order stated.

Judicial proceedings are expected to continue in a limited capacity with only essential staff and judges present. While the court has not cited a specific reason for the restricted operations, the move is seen as a precautionary step in light of the region’s proximity to sensitive border areas.
