The Delhi High Court on Tuesday ordered the immediate unblocking of the social media account belonging to the Cockroach Janta Party, a digital protest group whose X handle was restricted by the central government in May.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ruled in favor of a petition filed by the organization’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, challenging the government’s blocking directive. The court observed that the administrative concerns prompting the restriction were no longer applicable.
Court Cites Lapsed Exam Concerns
The central government had blocked the group’s original X handle on May 21. Representing the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the restriction was necessary to prevent widespread confusion and anxiety among students and parents in the days leading up to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test re-examination on June 21.
However, Justice Sharma stated in her ruling that because the NEET re-test has already concluded, the core justification for restricting the account has lost its relevance. Consequently, the court officially revoked the blocking order and allowed the petition.
Satirical Roots And Growth
The Cockroach Janta Party was established on May 15 as a satirical online initiative. Its creation followed a public controversy surrounding remarks made by the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant.
Although authorities restricted the movement’s original handle within a week of its launch, the group quickly established an alternative account under the username ‘Cockroach is Back.’ This backup handle has since amassed more than 227,000 followers. Supporters of the movement use the “cockroach” identity as an unconventional symbol of digital mobilization and protest.
Campaign Against Education Ministry
The organization describes itself as an independent, youth-driven initiative designed to elevate the concerns of younger generations and hold public officials accountable.
Currently, the group is running a digital campaign demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The campaign focuses on what the organization describes as systemic failures within the academic sector, specifically highlighting the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 question paper leak.
