Filmmaker and producer Karan Johar has moved the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights, alleging unauthorised use of his name and image on merchandise.
The matter came up before Justice Manmeet PS Arora on Monday. The judge sought certain clarifications from Johar’s counsel and listed the matter for further proceedings at 4 pm.
Johar has also requested the court to issue directions to certain websites and platforms to restrain them from illegally selling mugs, t-shirts, and other merchandise featuring his name, image, or likeness.
Senior advocate Rajshekhar Rao, appearing for Johar, argued, “I have a right to ensure that no one unauthorisedly uses my persona, face or voice.”
The petition emphasises Johar’s claim over his “right to publicity,” commonly referred to as personality rights — the legal entitlement to protect, control, and profit from one’s image, name, or likeness.
The court will continue hearing the matter later in the day.
