Delhi High Court Grants Bail to Wrestler Sushil Kumar in Chhatrasal Stadium Murder Case

The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Olympic wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the 2021 murder case of Sagar Dhankar, a former junior national wrestling champion, which occurred at Chhatrasal Stadium. The decision came on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, with Justice Sanjeev Narula presiding over the hearing.

Sushil Kumar, who has been in custody for over three years, was directed to post a personal bond of ₹50,000 along with two sureties of the same amount as a condition for his bail. The case, which drew widespread media attention due to Kumar’s prominence in the sports world, involved a fatal assault on Dhankar and his friends allegedly over a property dispute.

The assault led to Dhankar suffering significant cerebral damage due to the impact of a blunt object, as stated in the post-mortem report. Kumar and several associates were implicated in the incident, leading to his arrest and prolonged legal battle.

During the bail hearing, Kumar’s lawyer, Advocate R.K. Malik, highlighted the slow pace of the trial, noting that out of the 200 witnesses cited by the prosecution, only 31 have been examined so far. He argued that given the expected duration of the trial, Kumar deserved bail on the grounds of the undue delay in court proceedings.
