The Delhi High Court on Friday allowed a 10-day interim bail to Saleem Khan, who is implicated in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case concerning the 2020 Delhi communal riots, enabling him to arrange funds for his daughter’s college education. Khan is among the several individuals accused of orchestrating the riots that occurred in North-East Delhi in February 2020, which resulted in 53 deaths and injuries to over 700 people.
The bench, consisting of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur, sanctioned the bail to facilitate Khan in funding his daughter’s law studies at Jamia Hamdard University. The court’s decision was influenced by the necessity for Khan to provide for his daughter’s ongoing education.
During the bail hearing, Khan’s lawyer emphasized his client’s compliance with previous bail conditions, noting that Khan had been granted interim bail before, had not misused his liberty, and had consistently surrendered on time. However, the prosecution opposed the bail, highlighting Khan’s alleged involvement in the riots, including accusations of him damaging CCTV cameras during the disturbances.

In its ruling, the court took into account a verification report submitted by the prosecution that confirmed Khan’s daughter is indeed a law student at Jamia Hamdard University. As part of the bail conditions, Khan is required to submit a personal bond of Rs 20,000 along with a surety of the same amount.
