The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the city government and municipal corporations to respond to a petition raising concerns over the seismic stability of buildings in the national capital.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela asked the authorities to submit status reports on the issue, noting that the petition highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures to minimise damage from potential earthquakes.
The plea, filed by advocate Arpit Bhargava, sought framing of policies and guidelines to ensure the safety of residents of Delhi from the adverse effects of earthquakes. It also urged the court to hold the government and concerned authorities accountable for delays in taking remedial steps.

Additionally, the petitioner demanded strengthening of laws relating to earthquake preparedness, their time-bound implementation, and fixing of responsibility on officials in case of lapses.
