The Delhi High Court has issued a directive for immediate enhancement of hygiene and functionality across all district court washrooms in the capital, emphasizing the need for equitable standards for female, male, and differently-abled persons’ facilities.
Justice Sanjeev Narula highlighted the urgent need for action after a distressing report detailed the inadequate conditions of female washrooms across all district courts in Delhi. The report, which described various infrastructural shortcomings including poor lighting, insufficient ventilation, and a lack of essential hygiene products, sparked the court’s intervention.
“In compliance, Ms. Nathrani (court commissioner) has submitted a detailed report dated December 4, 2024, which paints a distressing picture. The negligence displayed in maintaining these facilities cannot be overlooked,” stated Justice Narula in his order. The findings pointed particularly to dire conditions within the lawyers’ chamber blocks, prompting a broader call for accountability and upkeep from the bar associations.
The court has tasked the principal district and sessions judges with overseeing the implementation of necessary remedial measures and has mandated the filing of a progress report. Additionally, the Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to commence necessary construction and repair work in line with current tenders. This includes ensuring an uninterrupted water supply, a significant issue noted at Saket and Karkardooma courts.
