In a startling ruling, a doctor in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, has been ordered to pay a compensation of 10 lakh rupees after a 14-year-long treatment left a patient unable to father children. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the medical community, concluded in the State Consumer Commission imposing an additional fine of 1 lakh rupees on a private hospital for seeking treatment from a government-employed doctor.
The patient, from Jaunpur, had sought medical help for fertility issues and was under the care of Dr. Arvind Gupta at Phoenix Hospital in Prayagraj. Dr. Gupta, a professor of nephrology at Motilal Nehru Medical College, was found to have administered numerous hormone injections over the course of treatment. However, subsequent evaluations by another doctor revealed that the treatment had catastrophic consequences, effectively ending the patient’s chances of becoming a father.
The State Consumer Commission’s presiding officer levied the fines after the patient provided evidence of the harm suffered due to the prolonged and improper treatment. The court has ordered that the entire amount, along with an additional 25,000 rupees for case-related expenses, be paid within 30 days with a 9 percent interest rate.
