CJI Surya Kant Virtually Unveils Rs 100 Crore Court Facilities In Kerala

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant virtually inaugurated two state-of-the-art court complexes in Irinjalakuda and Chavakkad on Tuesday evening, marking a Rs 100 crore judicial infrastructure expansion by the Kerala government aimed at decentralizing legal access.

Speaking at the virtual event, Chief Justice Kant highlighted the heavy case backlog in the district, noting that nearly 30,000 civil matters and more than 100,000 criminal cases are currently pending. He emphasized that expanding judicial infrastructure in smaller townships is critical to addressing the growing demand for justice as society becomes increasingly complex.

Infrastructure Tailored For Inclusivity And Support

The newly established complexes incorporate specialized facilities designed to streamline dispute resolution and accommodate vulnerable litigants. Chief Justice Kant noted that the inclusion of dedicated mediation halls reflects an institutional effort to encourage alternative dispute resolution, keeping every conflict from having to undergo a full trial.

Additionally, family courts within the facilities feature private counseling cubicles to ensure confidentiality and dignity for individuals navigating sensitive personal disputes. Addressing gender diversity within the legal profession, the Chief Justice added that a dedicated hall has been allocated for female lawyers, recognizing their vital role in the legal system and ensuring equal professional space.

Vision Of Accessible Justice And Flood Response

Framing the initiative as a step toward bringing courts closer to non-metropolitan populations, Chief Justice Kant drew a parallel between the legal framework and the traditional Onam floral carpet, the Pookkalam. He observed that just as a Pookkalam derives its beauty from combining diverse flowers, an effective justice system must remain inclusive and accessible to urban residents, rural communities, and remote tribal settlements alike.

The Chief Justice addressed the gathering virtually due to severe flooding in parts of Kerala, which prevented his physical attendance. Expressing condolences to those affected by the natural calamity, he offered wishes for their safety, strength, and recovery.
