CJI DY Chandrachud Stresses Importance of Liberty, Citing Bangladesh’s Unrest

Chief Justice of India (CJI), Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, on Thursday, highlighted the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh as a stark reminder of the vital importance of freedom and liberty. Speaking during the 78th Independence Day celebrations in Delhi, the Chief Justice drew parallels between the historical struggles for liberty in India and the current unrest in Bangladesh.

“The recent developments in Bangladesh serve as a clear reminder of how precious liberty is to us,” said CJI Chandrachud. “It is very easy to take freedom for granted, but recalling our past struggles is crucial to appreciating the liberties we enjoy today.”

Bangladesh has been grappling with a severe political crisis, which escalated last week when then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down after a month-long student-led protest demanding her resignation. Following her departure, she arrived in Delhi on the same day. In Bangladesh, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus is now facing challenges in restoring peace and protecting minorities, who have been targeted in recent attacks.

On a reflective note, CJI Chandrachud also honored the historical figures of India’s freedom movement, many of whom relinquished their professional and legal practices to fight for national independence. Noteworthy individuals mentioned included Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, among others.

“This Independence Day is an opportunity to honor those who dedicated their lives to make India greater,” he remarked. “Their commitment reminds us of the ongoing journey towards maintaining and cherishing our freedom.”
