CJI Chandrachud Unveils Major Upgrades as Supreme Court Reopens After Summer Vacation

As the Supreme Court of India reopened its doors after the summer vacation, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the court’s infrastructure and improving the experience for litigants and advocates alike.

The CJI revealed that over 40 initiatives were undertaken during the break to modernize and upgrade the court facilities. Among the most notable improvements are:

1. Air conditioning in the corridors outside Court Nos. 1-5, implemented in consultation with IIT Delhi and other organizations. This addition will provide a more comfortable waiting area for litigants and advocates.

2. Restoration of the advocates’ waiting room, offering a dedicated space for legal professionals to prepare and confer.

3. Ongoing work on the women’s Bar room, addressing the specific needs of female legal practitioners.

4. Progress on the construction of advocates’ cubicles, providing private workspaces within the court premises.

In addition to these improvements, the Supreme Court has embraced digital technology, introducing paperless courtrooms equipped with large screens for virtual hearing. The first three courtrooms now feature state-of-the-art video conferencing systems, LED video walls, and “document cameras” for clear display of physical documents.

The CJI has also announced the availability of free Wi-Fi for lawyers and visitors to the Supreme Court, further enhancing connectivity and access to digital resource.

These upgrades reflect the Supreme Court’s commitment to modernizing its facilities and leveraging technology to improve the efficiency and accessibility of the justice system. As the court resumes its operations, these enhancements are expected to significantly improve the working environment for legal professionals and the experience of litigants.
