The Centre has officially notified the transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from the Delhi High Court to the Calcutta High Court. This marks the third consecutive transfer of a Delhi High Court judge in recent months, following recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium.
Justice Sharma, who took oath as a judge of the Delhi High Court in February 2022, has had a distinguished judicial career. He joined the Delhi Judicial Service in 1992 and was promoted to the Higher Judicial Service in 2003. Over the years, he has held key positions, including Registrar General of the Delhi High Court and Director of the Delhi Judicial Academy.
Background and Context

The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recommended Justice Sharma’s transfer during a meeting on March 27, 2025. The move follows a series of judicial reshuffles involving Delhi High Court judges. Notably, Justice Yashwant Varma was recently recommended for transfer to the Allahabad High Court after allegations of unaccounted cash being discovered at his residence. Another judge, Justice C.D. Singh, was also proposed for repatriation to his parent court in Allahabad.
Justice Sharma’s transfer has sparked significant reactions. In Kolkata, three prominent bar associations—the Incorporated Law Society of Calcutta, Bar Library Club, and High Court Bar Association—have opposed the decision. They submitted a memorandum to the Chief Justice of India on March 29, citing “serious complaints” against Justice Sharma’s handling of high-stake civil cases in Delhi. These associations argue that such transfers undermine judicial credibility and have called for reconsideration.
