In a significant judicial appointment, the Central government confirmed Justice Harpreet Singh Brar as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday. Officially announced through a notification on the Ministry of Law & Justice website, this move comes after a series of recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium.
The notification articulated, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Harpreet Singh Brar, Additional Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, to be a Judge of that High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”
Justice Brar’s journey to permanent judgeship began with an initial recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium in July 2022, followed by a reiteration in March 2023. Subsequently, he was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court.
With Justice Brar’s appointment, the judiciary aims to fill the significant gap in the sanctioned strength of the High Court. Currently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court operates with 52 judges, falling short of its full complement of 85, reflecting 33 vacancies yet to be filled.
