The Bombay High Court on Tuesday affirmed the death penalty for Sunil Kuchkoravi, who was convicted by a Kolhapur court for the horrific killing of his mother in 2017 and the alleged cannibalization of her body parts. The division bench, consisting of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan, ruled that this case qualifies as “rarest of rare,” with no prospects for the convict’s reformation.
The chilling details of the crime emerged during the court proceedings, where it was revealed that Kuchkoravi not only murdered his 63-year-old mother, Yallama Rama Kuchkoravi, but also dismembered her body and cooked several organs, including her brain, heart, liver, kidney, and intestines. The convict was reportedly preparing to cook her heart when he was apprehended.
“The case falls under the rarest of rare category. The convict not only murdered his mother but he also removed her body parts and was cooking them on a pan,” the High Court stated, emphasizing the heinous nature of the crime which involved clear acts of cannibalism.
The high court noted the lack of potential for rehabilitation given Kuchkoravi’s tendencies, and expressed concern that he could commit similar offenses even if confined to life imprisonment. “If given life imprisonment, he may commit a similar crime in jail,” the bench cautioned.
Kuchkoravi, currently held at Yerwada Prison in Pune, participated in the hearing via video conference. The prosecution argued that the motive behind the gruesome murder stemmed from the victim’s refusal to give her son money to buy liquor.
