Bombay High Court Questions Maharashtra Government’s Inaction Against Illegal Hawkers

In a stern rebuke on Thursday, the Bombay High Court criticized the Maharashtra government for its inadequate enforcement of the Street Vendors Act, designed to manage unauthorised hawkers. The court highlighted the ongoing struggle of Mumbai citizens against the encroachment of hawkers on public roads, expressing frustration over the state’s failure to collaborate effectively with the Mumbai civic body.

The division bench, visibly disappointed, noted that despite the law being in place for a decade, its provisions remain largely unimplemented, exacerbating the issues faced by residents and pedestrians. “Why this helplessness?” questioned the court, reflecting on the government’s apparent incapacity to manage the situation.
