The Allahabad High Court’s AI-Assisted Legal Translation Advisory, e-AHCR and ILR Committee has launched the Hindi translation of the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment in Just Right for Children Alliance & Anr v. S. Harish & Ors as the sixth edition of its “Historical Judgments in e-Booklet Form” series.
The e-booklet, released on September 30, 2026, contains the Hindi translation of the Supreme Court’s September 23, 2024 judgment in Criminal Appeal Nos. 2161-2162 of 2024.
The judgment dealt with the legal consequences of downloading, viewing or storing child sexual exploitation material. The Supreme Court held that such conduct could constitute an offence under Indian law and overturned a Madras High Court order that had quashed a chargesheet on the ground that privately viewing or storing such material without transmitting it did not amount to an offence.
The Supreme Court bench comprised then Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice J.B. Pardiwala.
Supreme Court’s Key Directions
Among its directions, the Supreme Court called for the use of the expression “Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Material” or CSEAM instead of terms such as “child pornography”.
The Court also called for comprehensive sex education programmes, support services for victims, rehabilitation programmes for offenders and public awareness campaigns on the consequences of child sexual exploitation material.
It further suggested early identification of at-risk individuals, therapeutic strategies for young persons displaying problematic sexual behaviour and school-based programmes dealing with healthy relationships, consent and appropriate behaviour.
The Union of India was also asked to constitute an expert committee to work on the suggestions and necessary procedures. The Court further called upon Parliament to consider an amendment to sub-section (1) of Section 15 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
Sixth Edition in Historical Judgment Series
The publication follows earlier editions containing Hindi translations of judgments in the Chauri Chaura case, Keshav Singh case, Agra Conspiracy case, Cawnpore Bomb Blast case and Raj Narain v. Indira Nehru Gandhi.
Hindi translations of judgments in other historical cases are also proposed to be published in future editions. The initiative is intended to make important judicial material accessible to legal researchers, lawyers, judicial officers, law students and the general public. The e-booklets are being made available free of cost through the e-AHCR section of the Allahabad High Court’s official website.
Translation Project Led by SUVAS Cell
The AI-based translation project is being undertaken by the SUVAS Cells at Prayagraj and Lucknow under the patronage of Chief Justice Arun Bhansali.
The project is being guided by the AI-Assisted Legal Translation Advisory, e-AHCR and ILR Committee headed by Justice Ajit Kumar, with Justices Sameer Jain, Vikram D. Chauhan and Vivek Kumar Singh as members.
Justice Swarupama Chaturvedi was present at the formal launch. According to the publication note, she had earlier represented the cause of children as an advocate in the case and has also written the foreword to the e-booklet.
