Allahabad HC Chief Justice Designates Justice Rajan Roy as Senior Judge at Lucknow Bench 

In a significant administrative order, the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court Justice Arun Bhansali, has designated Justice Rajan Roy as the Senior Judge at the High Court, Lucknow Bench. The order, issued in exercise of powers under the Allahabad High Court Rules, 1952, entrusts Justice Roy with a wide range of administrative and jurisdictional responsibilities at the Lucknow Bench, effective immediately.

This development is due to the retirement of earlier Senior Judge Justice A.R Masoodi on 3rd August.

The Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court issued a formal order on August 3, 2025, concerning the administrative functioning of the Lucknow Bench. Citing the authority vested under Rule 9 of Chapter V of the Allahabad High Court Rules, 1952, the Chief Justice appointed Justice Rajan Roy, a sitting judge at the Lucknow Bench, to the post of Senior Judge. Based on the official information from the Allahabad High Court website, Justice Rajan Roy currently serves as a senior most judge at the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court. He is also a Member of the court’s Administrative Committee.

Justice Roy was born on August 15, 1965. He was elevated to the bench from the Bar, signifying his background as a practicing advocate before his appointment as a judge.

His judicial career at the Allahabad High Court began on February 3, 2014, which is noted as both his initial joining date and his joining date at Allahabad. According to the high court’s records, Justice Roy is scheduled to retire on August 14, 2027. 

Details of the Order: The order, which comes into force with immediate effect, states: “As per the provision of Rule 9 of Chapter V of the Allahabad High Court Rules, 1952, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajan Roy, Judge of the Allahabad High Court, presently sitting / holding Court at Lucknow Bench, Lucknow, shall be Senior Judge at High Court, Lucknow Bench and is authorized to exercise jurisdiction at Lucknow Bench, in connection with the following:”

The order proceeds to list the specific functions and jurisdictions assigned to Justice Roy:

  1. Work allocation of the Registry at the High Court Lucknow Bench, with the exception of matters relating to Judicial Officers posted in the Registry.
  2. Handling matters concerning the attachment of Law Clerks (Trainee).
  3. Granting permission for the use of the High Court lawn for functions and other similar events.
  4. Managing welcome and farewell references for Hon’ble Judges and other Full Court References.
  5. Overseeing all internship-related matters.
  6. Supervising matters related to the installation, use, and functioning of the franking machine.
  7. Authorizing permission for trainee Judicial Officers, students, and officers from other departments to visit the Court premises and observe court proceedings.
  8. Responsibility for the preparation of the list of Amicus Curiae.
  9. Deciding on matters related to cause list subscription fees.
  10. Sanctioning the purchase of stationery items of the value more than Rs. 20,000/- and less than Rs. 1,00,000/-. This includes purchases on approved rates or, where rates are not approved, by inviting quotations from open markets.
