Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has petitioned the Calcutta High Court over alleged police inaction following an incident in which demonstrators pelted eggs at her vehicle during a constituency visit to Nadia district.
Representing the Krishnanagar lawmaker, advocate Arka Nag submitted the plea on Monday, contending that law enforcement authorities failed to provide necessary protection despite an existing judicial order directing that security be arranged for her visits. The High Court stated that the application will be listed for hearing in accordance with the court’s regular serial schedule.
Details of the Tehatta Confrontation
The petition stems from an incident on September 16 in Tehatta, where demonstrators waving black flags intercepted Moitra’s vehicle and threw eggs while she was attending a party event. Moitra alleged that seven to ten Bharatiya Janata Party workers took part in the incident, identifying among them a local Mandal president as well as the president and vice-president of the local panchayat samiti.
During the episode, the two-term parliamentarian broadcast a live video on social media, questioning how demonstrators were able to throw eggs in the presence of deployed police personnel. Footage from the broadcast showed broken eggshells on her face.
Previous Court Directives and Ongoing Friction
The fresh legal action follows an earlier interim order by the Calcutta High Court instructing police to assign two security personnel to Moitra whenever she visits her constituency through the end of September.
Moitra, who is aligned with the Mamata Banerjee faction of the Trinamool Congress, has previously stated that political opponents have subjected her to repeated harassment and egg-pelting during visits to her constituency following a change in government in West Bengal.
