Justice Sanjay Kumar Agrawal was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court on Monday, with Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade administering the oath of office.
His assumption of office follows the Central government’s clearance of his appointment last week. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Agrawal for appointment as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court on August 31, 2026.
Justice Agrawal comes to the Rajasthan High Court after a judicial career of nearly 13 years at the Chhattisgarh High Court, where he was elevated as an Additional Judge in September 2013 and subsequently made a Permanent Judge in March 2016.
From Advocacy to the Bench
Justice Agrawal enrolled as an advocate on January 3, 1989. During his legal practice, he gained experience before trial courts as well as High Courts.
He served as Deputy Advocate General for the State of Chhattisgarh between 2002 and 2004. On June 25, 2012, he was appointed Advocate General of Chhattisgarh.
His transition from the Bar to the Bench came on September 16, 2013, when he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court. He took oath as a Permanent Judge of the High Court on March 8, 2016.
Collegium Recommendation for Rajasthan
On August 31, 2026, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Justice Agrawal’s transfer from the Chhattisgarh High Court to the Rajasthan High Court. On the same date, the Collegium also recommended his appointment as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
The Central government subsequently cleared the appointment, paving the way for Monday’s oath-taking ceremony.
Justice Agrawal’s professional and judicial career has remained closely associated with Chhattisgarh, including Bilaspur and Raipur. Beginning his legal career in 1989, he went on to serve the State as Deputy Advocate General and Advocate General before joining the Chhattisgarh High Court Bench in 2013.
With his swearing-in on Monday, Justice Agrawal has now taken charge as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
