The Calcutta High Court has scheduled an August 20 hearing for a petition filed by Md Nazibuddin Mondal, also known as Tulu Mondal, who is seeking the quashing of a police First Information Report registered against him.
Appearing before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya on Friday, senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi submitted the plea on behalf of Mondal, contending that the case against his client was initiated with mala fide intent. Rohatgi requested that the matter be taken up on August 20 to allow Mondal to appear in court physically and present his case. Justice Bhattacharyya granted the prayer and directed that the petition be listed for hearing on the specified date.
Large Cash And Gold Seizure
The legal petition follows a major police operation during the last week of July, when authorities raided the residence of one of Mondal’s relatives in Birbhum district. Law enforcement officials identified the property as an alleged hideout used by Mondal and seized 15 kilograms of gold alongside a large quantity of cash, with the total value of the recovery estimated at nearly Rs 50 crore.
Mondal, who is alleged to operate sand mining, stone quarrying, and transport networks across Birbhum district, has not been seen in public since the seizure took place. An official confirmed that police are currently seeking his whereabouts.
Government Action On Syndicates
Addressing the case in a social media post, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari identified Mondal as a key figure in the local sand mafia and stated that vigilance efforts and uncompromising enforcement actions against syndicate operations in the state would continue without interruption.
