The Telangana High Court on Wednesday issued a four-week interim stay on the operation of the state government’s Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak welfare schemes.
The court granted the interim order after the state government failed to file a counter-affidavit responding to a public interest petition. The legal challenge, filed by advocate Vijay Gopal, questions the constitutional validity of the executive orders governing both programs. In his petition, Gopal contended that the government orders executing the schemes lack supporting legislation passed by the state legislature.
Background And Welfare Objective
Both initiatives were originally launched in 2014 by the previous BRS administration to offer a one-time financial grant of Rs 1,00,116 to brides at the time of their marriage.
The Kalyana Lakshmi scheme was introduced to ease economic distress among Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and minority families by supporting unmarried women. Meanwhile, the Shaadi Mubarak scheme was tailored specifically for minority community brides, aiming to assist financially strained families with wedding costs and curb child marriage.
