The Calcutta High Court on Monday instructed the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate to clarify whether any criminal cases are currently pending against former Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Asit Majumder.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya issued the order, giving the police commissioner one week to supply the former legislator with a comprehensive list of any ongoing criminal prosecutions registered against him.
Concerns Over Potential Additional Charges
The court direction came after Majumder’s advocate, Kalyan Banerjee, voiced concerns that the former Chunchura representative could have been booked in additional cases following his recent release on bail.
Majumder was taken into police custody on July 21 on land-grabbing allegations after a neighbor lodged a formal complaint accusing him of encroaching on her property. A magistrate court in Hooghly district granted him bail on the same day as his arrest.
CBI Clarification and Political Context
In a related submission ordered by the high court earlier, the Central Bureau of Investigation confirmed through a report that it has no pending criminal cases against the former politician.
Majumder, who previously served as an MLA, did not contest the assembly elections earlier this year after the Trinamool Congress opted not to grant him a party nomination.
