The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed an application filed by Ashish Mishra, the principal accused in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, seeking a further relaxation of his bail conditions.
A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V Mohana turned down the plea, ruling that no valid grounds existed to consider the request at this stage of the proceedings.
Court Finds No Basis For Relief
During the hearing, legal counsel representing Mishra informed the bench that existing bail restrictions prevented him from attending family functions, specifically highlighting his inability to celebrate his daughters’ birthdays.
Rejecting the argument, Chief Justice Surya Kant stated that there was no reason to grant relief at this point and formally dismissed the application.
Background Of The 2021 Incident
Mishra is among the individuals facing trial over the violence that took place on October 3, 2021, in Tikunia village, situated in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district. The clashes occurred during a demonstration by farmers protesting a scheduled visit by Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.
The incident resulted in eight deaths. According to the prosecution, four farmers were run over by a sports utility vehicle, following which a driver, two Bharatiya Janata Party workers, and a journalist were killed in the surrounding violence.
