Calcutta High Court Grants Bail To TMC Leader Jayprakash Majumdar

The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Trinamool Congress leader Jayprakash Majumdar, who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly occupying an apartment illegally.

Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee approved the bail on the condition that Majumdar cooperate with the ongoing investigation and refrain from intimidating any witnesses in the case. The ruling comes nearly a month after the politician was taken into custody.

Background Of The Dispute

Police arrested Majumdar on June 3 following a formal complaint from the owner of a flat located in Salt Lake, an area in the eastern parts of Kolkata.

According to the property owner, Majumdar originally rented the apartment in 2014. The landlord alleged that the Trinamool Congress leader continued to occupy the premises for years despite repeated requests to vacate. The complainant further stated that attempts to either collect outstanding rent or reclaim possession of the property were met with intimidation and threats from Majumdar.

Protest During Police Investigation

Following his arrest, police escorted Majumdar to the Salt Lake flat on June 5 as part of their investigation. During this visit, onlookers pelted the Trinamool Congress leader with eggs while he was in police custody.
