The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation to issue fresh, clarified notices to a relative of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee and the company Leaps and Bounds concerning the legality of a residential building in the city’s Kalighat area.
Justice Smita Das De, presiding over a vacation bench, ruled that the previous showcause notices issued by the civic body were incomplete. The court ordered the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to specify exactly which portions of the structure do not comply with municipal laws.
Under the court’s directive, the KMC must send these updated notices via speed post within one week. Subsequently, petitioner Amit Banerjee and Leaps and Bounds have three weeks to submit their response and clarify their position to the civic body. The matter is scheduled for another hearing before a regular bench of the high court in four weeks.
The legal proceedings were initiated by Amit Banerjee and Leaps and Bounds, who petitioned the high court to challenge the KMC’s original showcause notices regarding the structural legality of certain sections of the building. The house serves as the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee.
In an unrelated investigation, the Enforcement Directorate has identified Abhishek Banerjee as the chief executive officer of Leaps and Bounds.
