‘Geographical Distance No Barrier to Justice’: CJI Surya Kant Inaugurates Landmark Court Complex in Kargil

In a move to bridge the gap between remote regions and the judicial system, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Sunday virtually inaugurated a newly constructed district court complex in Kargil. During the ceremony, the CJI emphasized that the delivery of justice must transcend physical boundaries and that geographical isolation should never hinder a citizen’s access to the legal system.

The inauguration marks a pivotal milestone for the judicial infrastructure of the Union Territory of Ladakh. Speaking from the national capital, the Chief Justice described the event as a “landmark step” toward strengthening the rule of law in the country’s most challenging terrains.

Addressing a gathering that included Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh V K Saxena and Chief Justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh Arun Palli, CJI Surya Kant noted that the new facility is more than just a physical building.

“Geographical constraints must not impede justice delivery,” the CJI stated. He further characterized Kargil as a “symbol of resilience,” noting that the new complex represents a qualitative enhancement of the justice system designed to instill renewed confidence among litigants.

The proceedings featured a comprehensive 3D presentation detailing the architecture of the new complex. The facility is equipped with modern courtrooms, administrative offices, and dedicated residential quarters for judicial officers, ensuring a self-sufficient ecosystem for the local judiciary.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena expressed his appreciation for the CJI’s leadership in facilitating the project. Saxena described the complex as a tangible symbol of the government’s commitment to providing “accessible and effective justice” to the people of Ladakh, while assuring the judiciary of continued administrative support.

Echoing these sentiments, Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, shared his optimism regarding the ongoing modernization and expansion of judicial facilities across the region.

The local legal community also welcomed the development. Riyaz Ahmed Khan, President of the Kargil Bar Association, conveyed his gratitude to the CJI and the administration, stating that the inauguration fulfills a “long-pending demand” of the region. Khan expressed confidence that the enhanced infrastructure would substantially bolster the efficiency of the district’s legal proceedings.

The ceremony commenced with the national song and national anthem, followed by the formal unveiling and reading of a commemorative plaque to mark the historic opening.
