The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government’s Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD) to take prompt remedial steps for the cleaning and maintenance of the Palam drain in Dwarka, following allegations of untreated sewage and industrial waste being discharged into it.
The green tribunal was hearing a plea that raised concerns about pollution in the Palam drain, which runs alongside a residential area in Dwarka Sector-3. The applicant alleged that untreated sewage and industrial effluents from nearby areas were being discharged into the drain, posing environmental and public health risks.
It was further contended that authorities had failed to carry out regular cleaning and desilting of the drain, leading to its deteriorating condition.
In its order dated March 23, a bench comprising expert members A. Senthil Vel and Afroz Ahmad observed that the drain required consistent monitoring and upkeep. The tribunal emphasised the responsibility of both the MCD and the IFCD in ensuring proper maintenance.
Disposing of the application, the bench directed the authorities to address the grievance raised and take necessary remedial action without delay.
“Hence, we dispose of this original application directing the MCD and IFCD to look into the grievance of the applicant and take appropriate remedial action expeditiously,” the tribunal said.
