Film Title Row Ends: Supreme Court Disposes Plea Against ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ After Filmmaker Withdraws Name, Undertakes Fresh Title

The Supreme Court on Thursday disposed of a plea challenging the title of the upcoming film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ after filmmaker Neeraj Pandey informed the court that he had withdrawn the title and all related publicity material.

A bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan took Pandey’s affidavit on record and observed that it expected a “quietus” to the controversy in all respects.

In his affidavit, Pandey stated that although the new title of the Manoj Bajpayee-starrer has not yet been finalised, it would not resemble or be evocative of the earlier title.

“While the new title has not yet been finalised, I undertake that any title that may hereafter be identified and adopted shall not be similar to, or evocative of, the earlier title in respect of which objections were raised, and shall accurately reflect the narrative,” the affidavit said.

Recording this undertaking, the court disposed of the petition.

On February 12, the bench had expressed strong disapproval of the original title, observing that a section of society cannot be denigrated in the name of freedom of expression.

The plea before the court had sought a stay on the release of the film on Netflix on the ground that the title was objectionable.
