The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea seeking directions to social media platform X and the BJP Assam Pradesh unit to take down a video that allegedly “openly targets, vilifies and demonizes Muslims.”
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notice on the application and posted the matter for further hearing on October 28.
The application, filed through advocate Lzafeer Ahmad, claimed that the BJP’s Assam unit circulated the video on its official X handle on September 15, 2025, presenting what it described as a “grossly false narrative” about the state’s future if the ruling party loses power.

According to the plea, the video depicts visibly Muslim individuals — shown wearing skull caps and burqas — “taking over” tea estates, Guwahati airport, and Guwahati town, as a supposed consequence of a change in the state government.
“It is submitted that as the ruling dispensation, BJP-Assam is bound by the Constitution of India and thereby is bound to uphold the secular values that form part of the basic structure of the Constitution. However, the video circulated by its official Twitter openly targets, vilifies and demonizes Muslims,” the application stated.
The plea argued that a state government acts as the guardian of all communities and is explicitly prohibited from discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, gender, or language.
“Thus, the burden of being fair, just and secular is far greater on an elected government,” it added.
The application noted that the video, posted on the official X handle of BJP Assam Pradesh, had over 4.6 million views, been reposted 6,100 times, and liked 19,000 times as of September 18, 2025.
It urged that the video be taken down immediately to prevent the further spread of communal disharmony, unrest, and enmity.
The applicant sought directions to X India Pvt. Ltd. and BJP Assam Pradesh to remove the video from the platform.
The application was filed in an ongoing matter before the Supreme Court concerning hate speech.
