The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Rajasthan government to provide a detailed account of the number and placement of CCTV cameras in every police station across the state. The order came in a suo motu matter concerning the lack of functional surveillance systems in police facilities.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued the directive while noting that effective monitoring was crucial in the backdrop of alarming reports of custodial deaths.
The bench asked the state government not only to furnish the total number of cameras but also to clarify whether any regular audits were being conducted to ensure their proper functioning. “If so, the detailed report with complete statistics be placed on record,” the order stated.
The court further directed the state to respond to 12 specific queries raised by the bench within two weeks. The matter has been listed for further hearing on October 14.
The suo motu proceedings were triggered after the apex court took cognisance of a media report highlighting 11 custodial deaths in Rajasthan in the first eight months of 2025, including seven incidents in the Udaipur division.
